Colour
Diamond colour grading system starts from the whitest colour D to Z as the tables below shows. The basic rule between D-Z is the whiter the diamond the more expensive it is. These colours come naturally in nature but can be enhanced by man-made treatments which have to be declared as it lowers the prices of the stone. So always ask if the diamond has been treated in any way which should be declared on the certificate attached with the stone.
DIAMOND COLOURS D-Z
GRADING & TERMINOLOGY
Natural Fancy Colours
Further to D-Z described above are ‘Fancy coloured diamonds’. These Diamonds come naturally in a ray of colours some of these such as pinks, reds, purple, blues, green and orange are very sought after and very expensive. The more vivid these colours are the more expensive they become. These colours can also be created by man-made treatments which have to be declared as they cost a fraction of the price of natural coloured stone.
Diamond are made of pure carbon and its colours arise from impurities within its structure. Orange and yellows are due to excess nitrogen clusters, blues to boron concentrations. The higher the concentration the more intense the colour becomes. Other more complex factors give rise to pinks, reds, violet and greens which are from lattice deformation and natural radiation.
It is a must when buying natural fancy coloured diamonds due to the high price to always have a GIA certificate as they are the strictest reputable laboratory on colour grading.
